Women’s equality is often discussed in terms of access: access to education, work, leadership, healthcare, and equal opportunities. But underneath all of these conversations about women’s equality is something more fundamental: the right to choose. To choose what kind of life you want. To choose what your body means to you. To choose what you wear, who you love, whether you stay, whether you leave, and what you want for yourself. Equality does not mean that every woman should make the same choices. It means she should have the freedom to make her own.
Choice Is a Form of Freedom
For generations, women have had expectations disguised as rules. Be attractive, but not too sexual. Be successful, but not intimidating. Be independent, but still agreeable. Be desirable, but don't express desire too openly. Be a mother. Be a partner. Be feminine. Be strong. There is always another definition of what a woman should be. The body is often where expectations become most visible. How a woman should dress. How much skin she should show. How she should look. How she should age. How she should behave in intimacy. Women are constantly encouraged to see their bodies through someone else's eyes. But your body does not exist to satisfy a standard. It is the first place you experience the world.
